The Leonberger is a giant, lion-like breed from Germany known for their gentle, friendly temperament and impressive mane. Bred to resemble a lion, they are surprisingly agile and graceful for their massive size.

History

Created in the 1840s by Heinrich Essig, mayor of Leonberg, Germany, by crossing Saint Bernards, Newfoundlands, and Great Pyrenees. The goal was to create a dog that resembled the lion on the Leonberg city crest. AKC recognized in 2010.

Appearance

A very large, muscular dog with a distinctive lion-like mane around the neck. Waterproof coat with feathering. Black mask on a broad, friendly face. Their build combines power with elegance.
