Lagotto Romagnolo

The Lagotto Romagnolo is an Italian water retriever turned truffle hunter, prized for its excellent nose and curly, hypoallergenic coat. This ancient breed combines working ability with a loving, family-friendly temperament.

One of the oldest water retriever breeds, originating in the marshlands of Romagna, Italy. When the marshes were drained in the 1800s, the breed was repurposed as the world's premier truffle-hunting dog, a role they still fill today.

Compact and sturdy with a distinctive dense, curly coat that forms tight ringlets. Their rounded head, large expressive eyes, and curly-coated ears give them an appealing teddy bear appearance.

Affectionate, keen, and undemanding. Lagotti are eager workers with an excellent nose and a natural love for searching and digging.

Friendly with family and generally good with strangers. They get along well with children and other pets. Their gentle nature makes them excellent family dogs.

Moderate exercise needs. About 45–60 minutes daily. They love nose work, swimming, and digging. Mental stimulation through scent games is ideal.

Highly trainable and eager to please. They excel at scent work and obedience. Positive reinforcement produces excellent results.

Regular grooming needed to prevent matting. Brush or comb through curls weekly. Professional grooming every 4–6 weeks. Their coat doesn't shed much.

Generally very healthy with exceptional longevity. BFJE is a breed-specific condition that puppies usually outgrow. DNA testing is available.

High-quality food for medium breeds. About 1–1.5 cups daily in two meals. They maintain weight well.

Adaptable to apartments with adequate exercise. They do well in various living situations. A yard is nice but not essential.

Excellent for families, couples, and individuals. Great with children. Their moderate needs suit many lifestyles.

Highly intelligent with an exceptional sense of smell. They excel at scent detection and problem-solving. Quick learners with strong work ethic.

Moderate barkers. They may alert to visitors but are not excessive. Generally calm and quiet indoors.

Very low shedding. Their curly, woolly coat traps loose hair and is considered hypoallergenic. One of the best breeds for allergy sufferers.

Lagotto puppies are curious and energetic. Start scent games early to develop their natural abilities. Socialize well and begin grooming routines young.

Senior Lagotti remain active and healthy well into old age. They are one of the longest-lived medium breeds. Continue moderate exercise and mental stimulation.
